In 2014, iVF Riga Clinic opened the unique Centre for Reproductive Genetics. Our special offer – genetic analyses of the embryos before the transfer into the uterus, as well as the help for people with monogenic diseases.
The new word in medicine and infertility treatment is an opportunity to guarantee the birth of a healthy child for the parents. It is even possible for women after 40 years who are at increased risk of genetic diseases, the patients with possible or confirmed genetic disorders in the family medical history, have a child with congenital malformations, history of unsuccessful artificial insemination or miscarriage, unknown cause of infertility. PGS method (Preimplantation genetic screening or chromosomal analysis allows for simultaneous testing of the entire set of chromosomes of an embryo on the day 5 of development) comes to the aid for these patients.
The unique preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD or the examination of monogenic diseases) that offers our Genetic laboratory, gives an opportunity to analyze fetal cells in order to determine which of the embryos did not inherit the mutation (or mutations) of the gene, thus allowing to continue the pregnancy, knowing that the further spread of the disease in the family has been stopped.
Using PGD, iVF Riga Clinic has an opportunity to help people with rare congenital diseases such as Huntington's chorea, Achondroplasia (dwarfism), Cystic fibrosis, Fragile X chromosome syndrome, Myotubular myopathy, Hemophilia, Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy.
Important to know: even if the patients or their children have been diagnosed with a genetic disorder, it does not mean that a healthy child cannot be born in this family!

Nevertheless, there are cases where own resources are exhausted – then egg donation comes to the aid. iVF Riga Clinic offers an unique program selecting individual donors with the help of special genetic testing – HLA typing of the recipient for compatibility with the egg donor. iVF Riga Clinic has her own official bank of genetic material in the Baltic States, we have legal donation, a wide selection of anonymous, young and healthy donors (our donors must undergo serious health check by gynaecologist, geneticist and addiction psychiatrist, as well as tests for infections, microbiological and pap smears).
In cases of male infertility, there are different kinds of tests that can be used to diagnose and to help at iVF Riga Clinic. In the case of a critically low sperm concentration in the ejaculate or ejaculatory functions disorders, it is possible to carry out TESE manipulation (testicular sperm extraction), a surgical procedure that requires the removal of small amounts of tissue from the testicles and extracting the fluid with a thin needle. If the sperm is not found during this procedure, it is possible to use donor sperm.
As Dr. Fodina always tells our patients, there are no hopeless situations – you just have to believe and act! And please remember: Your happiness is closer than You think!
