Innovative CLT showcases the group’s operating principle - From a plant to a house

Starting from August, a conceptual building made by the wood industry and forestry group BONO – a solid wood family house – has been presented in Garkalne parish. The property with its area of 2,500 m² and the 184 m² family house embody the BONO business philosophy: from a plant to a house – where cutting edge technologies are used to create a sustainable and human friendly environment.

The house has been built of cross laminated timber (CLT) that, unlike other solutions, such as timber framing or concrete blocks, makes it possible to maintain a natural wooden surface displayed in the house interior. The technology facilitates the process of building, as well as preserving natural features and the quality of wood while simultaneously ensuring a pleasant atmosphere inside. The building is made so as to allow the maximum natural lighting during the daytime thanks to its large wooden windows. Two independent ventilation installations take care of the quality of air in the house, ensuring the best climate for its inhabitants.

In the private house building sector in Europe, including Latvia, wood is the most valued and in demand material. CLT or cross laminated timber panel buildings have gained increasing interest. Over the last two years BONO has developed six various CLT private house projects, and currently, the CLT building presented for the examination offers the best qualities that these type of houses can provide to their inhabitants: cutting edge, scientifically proven energy efficiency solutions and a healthy lifestyle based on holistic principles.

“The philosophy of our enterprise is based on sustainability principles that allow us to add maximum value to the wood growing in Latvia at all stages of forestry supply and the processing chain. We act responsibly towards both nature by maintaining its diversity and towards people – our partners, investors and customers. BONO strives to maintain sustainability and to create a human friendly environment by modernising wood industry working techniques that transform wood into a high quality product. Currently, BONO has already met all requirements for a sustainable enterprise set forth in EU directives. We carefully develop the enterprise’s sustainability strategy and work on its implementation as our goal is to become one of the strongest wood industry enterprises in the Baltic region,” Janis Upenieks /Jānis Upenieks/, a BONO board member, says at the presentation of the conceptual building.

“We perceive construction of CLT buildings as development of a sustainable and quality product, therefore we select each material used and business partners for all processes very responsibly to correspond to BONO’s business philosophy and goals. CLT house are a new standard of future construction. Some European Union countries already determine what percentage of wood should be used in construction in the future. Therefore, we are glad that we can offer prospective CLT house owners an opportunity to ascertain how efficient and human and environmentally friendly wood is if it is used as a modern construction material,” Annija Zentina /Annija Žentiņa/, chief development officer at BONO House, says.
